Polish Government reacts on women’s protests – Really a U-turn?

The reaction by Polish women to the proposal of a complete abortion ban in Poland this week has put huge pressure on Warsaw and now something seems to be moving.

After mass protests of Polish women on the streets of several Polish and European cities, the Polish government now has to engage in a debate regarding its recent decision to continue with a move towards a full ban on abortion. Polish delegates will now have to face mounting pressure in the European Parliament when the matter is brought up for debate.

As expected, the government had to react to the massive pressure of international organisations as well as its own citizens who were supported by women’s rights activists from all around the world.

Jaroslaw Gowin, the Minister for Science and Higher Education, said Wednesday that the protest of women had “caused us to think and taught us humility”.

Stanislaw Karczewski, Senate speaker, on the other hand said that he is in favour of banning abortion of foetuses with Down syndrome, which is currently allowed.

This leads me to the conclusion that the problem is still on the table and the protests and the pressure must continue.

Politicians say a lot, but what we need are written facts and laws.
